In this series of tutorials, we will look at a variety of methods for modeling an automobile in MODO. CG cars are a common sight in film and commercial projects. Whether it’s a commercial to show off the car’s superior engineering or they’re being tossed around by giant monsters in a movie, there is a big need to create 3D automotive models. The different parts of a car can present specific challenges but MODO provides some great tools to help us.

In this Tutorial we’ll use some polygon techniques to begin building our Dodge Charger with an eye towards its distinctive lines. Once we’re happy with the shape, we can cut the panels apart and add thickness. We’ll cover methods for maintaining hard edges and smooth contours. We’ll cover the common polygon modeling tools like Bevel and Loop Slice, as well as some duplication methods.

It’s a big project, but we’ll go step by step so that by the end, you’ll have created a 3D car from scratch. From there you can continue to add detail, materials, or begin creating the interior.
